InsaMAT Studio by Abstract

Soft

Abstract has extensive experience, particularly in the gaming industry, and is best known as the developer of the InstaLOD mesh optimization technology. In addition to being utilized in AAA game development, it is employed in visual effects and industrial design, and is integrated into Digital Content Creation (DCC) applications, including Reallusion's Character Creator.
InstaMAT is the second technology from Abstract to be made publicly available and, according to the initial product announcement, is the result of over five years of development.

InstaMAT Studio's core functionalities will be familiar to users of Substance 3D tools – this becomes evident when watching the video. The software combines features available in various Substance 3D tools, including material creation based on nodes in the style of Substance 3D Designer and 3D texture painting akin to Substance 3D Painter. The InstaMAT Canvas interface allows the creation of procedural materials by connecting nodes together, and it includes features such as advanced search. The program comes with a library consisting of "thousands" of nodes, including "over 1000 ready-made AAA-quality materials," crafted by in-house artists at Abstract. Users can also create their functions for use in nodes or even entire custom nodes.
Artists can also paint directly on 3D models in real-time in the viewport. The painting toolset is layer-based and includes masks, filters for precise image adjustments, and generators for procedural noise creation. UDIM workflows are supported, and mesh-based texture maps can be baked on the CPU or GPU. Users can place one layer-based material into another, and changes made to the nested material are automatically propagated to the original material.
Workflows can even be combined: dragging a node-based material into a layer-based project automatically expands its constituent layers, and dragging a layer-based project into a node-based material automatically transforms it into a node in the graph.

In addition to the mentioned features, InstaMAT Studio provides functionalities for AI-based texture generation and processing. The Materialize Image system generates a set of PBR texture maps from a single source photograph, similar to the Image to Material feature in Substance 3D Sampler. Presumably, other AI-based features demonstrated in the launch video include texture scaling, style transfer between textures, and even the synthesis of entirely new textures with input support.
Beyond materials, InstaMAT Studio can generate 3D geometry: the program includes a set of procedural modeling tools—a feature that was removed from Substance 3D Designer. The software's node graph can also handle point cloud data, and in a video dedicated to the program's launch, a data synthesis feature is shown for regenerating areas of unprocessed 3D scans.

InstaMAT Studio is part of a broader ecosystem of tools, and integration plugins allow for the direct editing of created materials in 3ds Max, Blender, Maya, Unity, and Unreal Engine. For users with a commercial subscription, there's a separate InstaMAT Pipeline application enabling the execution of InstaMAT Studio graphs from the command line, facilitating tasks such as automating module tests or baking mesh data.
InstaMAT Studio is compatible with Windows 7 and above, Windows Server 2016 and above, and macOS 13.0 and above. Integration plugins are available for 3ds Max, Blender, Maya, Unity, and Unreal Engine.
The Pioneer edition is available for free to artists and studios with revenue less than $100,000/year and can be used in commercial projects with certain limitations.
For users with revenue less than $250,000/year, perpetual licenses cost $489.99, and rental options are $9.99/month or $109.99/year. For users with revenue exceeding $250,000/year, perpetual licenses cost $949.99, and rental options are $24.99/month or $274.99/year. Abstract also offers Game and Enterprise licenses for the entire studio.
