"Uniform" is the second iPad application developed by Sparseal, founded by former Blender sculpting tools lead Pablo Dobarro and Godo Engine developer Joan Fons. The creators describe Uniform as "2D/3D art-oriented software for the entire asset creation process, featuring a modular scene system and tools unlike anything you've seen before."
Their first app, CozyBlanket, focused on retopology, allowing users to retopologize 3D models by simply drawing new edge flows on high-resolution model surfaces.
Uniform has a much broader focus, though it's hard to pinpoint exactly. According to Dobarro, it's an unusual tool that doesn't fit neatly into polygonal modeling or digital sculpting, yet it "has features reminiscent of these workflows." While Uniform doesn’t use the term "sculpting," it does include displacement brushes and delta deformers. Depending on how you use them, the result may resemble high-polygon sculpting.
Other tools include image editing, UV editing, texture painting - both vertex-based and layer-based PBR texture map painting, procedural geometry, curves, retopology, lighting, and rendering. The app supports both multi-touch input and the Apple Pencil stylus.
Uniform is designed for artists to create 3D assets for use in games or concept art. The workflow is aimed at creating content from scratch: while simple meshes can be imported, "importing entire scenes (e.g., USD files) might be challenging." The app "exports standard meshes and textures so that you can use its results in other programs."
The Uniform release hasn't happened yet. Sparseal plans to announce the beta release on its Discord server.
Initially, the app will be available only for iPadOS. There are no current plans for an Android version, and a desktop version "will depend on distribution and hardware compatibility." Sparseal hasn't announced pricing yet, but it will "follow the same market trends as similar products" rather than "racing to the bottom for maximum user acquisition."
