A Civil War breaks out in Poland, prompting the USSR to deploy its forces in order to support the current government and preserve its influence. From the north, a wide-front offensive begins, stretching from Mamonovo to Grodno.
The Northern Group manages to capture Gdańsk and advance as far as Poznań. Olsztyn and Białystok also fall under Soviet control.
From the east, the USSR seizes Lublin.
On the southern axis, advancing from Lviv, the Soviet Army comes into direct confrontation with NATO forces. NATO declares the need to protect Poland’s population from the Civil War, using the crisis as a pretext for a so-called “humanitarian intervention.”
The emphasis is placed on the “restoration of freedom and democracy” in Eastern Europe.
Unprepared to encounter such a large NATO presence, the Soviet advance halts outside Kraków.
