January 1984 ————————— A year ago, through diplomatic efforts, considering the strong dissatisfaction with the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia and the martial law in Poland, the Western world offered economic aid and support for reforms. By supporting opposition movements such as "Charter 77" in Czechoslovakia and "Solidarity" in Poland, Western countries created enormous pressure on communist regimes. Alliances were formed with opposition groups in these countries, offering them support in the form of funding, training, and resources. Public discontent with the communist parties grew. After the capture of East Germany, propaganda emphasized NATO's successes as an example of possible changes for neighboring countries.
