Substance 3D Sampler 4.4 by Adobe
Adobe released Substance 3D Sampler 4.4 in beta back in March, and at that time, it had only one new feature related to generative artificial intelligence: Text-to-texture. As the name suggests, this feature generates textures with repeating patterns based on simple text prompts, automatically creating four texture variants from which the user can choose one. Then, the texture can be transformed into a full PBR material using the existing Image to Material system in Substance 3D Sampler.
Sampler automatically attaches Adobe Content Credentials to assets created with Firefly, indicating in the metadata that they were generated by artificial intelligence. Additionally, in the final release, two more artificial intelligence features were added: Image-to-texture and Text-to-pattern. Image-to-texture also generates textures, but based on a reference image rather than a text prompt, providing greater control over the resulting textures. The output is always a tileable texture, although the reference image itself does not necessarily need to be tiled and can have any aspect ratio. Text-to-pattern works similarly to Text-to-texture, generating a square pattern from a text description. The result can be used as input for existing Pattern or Cloth Weave filters.
All three new AI features are still officially in beta, even in the final release. To use them, an Adobe account is required, meaning they are only available to users with a Substance 3D subscription, not with the old perpetual license sold through Steam. Adobe discontinued the Steam version earlier this year but stated that users "will receive free updates throughout 2024."
Substance 3D Sampler 4.4 is compatible with Windows 10 and above, CentOS 7.0 and above/Ubuntu 20.04 and above Linux, and macOS 11.0 and above. The software is now available only through subscription. Editions for Windows and macOS are available through the Adobe Substance 3D Texturing subscription, priced at $19.99 per month or $219.88 per year, and through the Substance 3D Collection subscription, priced at $49.99 per month or $549.88 per year. The Linux edition is available through Creative Cloud for Teams at a price of $1,199.88 per year.
