Sketchsoft's Feather app, released in 2022, now at version 1.3, hasn't received much coverage in English media. It allows artists to create 3D sketches on touch-enabled devices using a stylus or fingers. The app employs an interesting workflow where 3D guides are drawn first, followed by strokes on these guides, rotating the sketch in 3D using the device's sensor.
The online Feather user guide briefly describes other key features, including the ability to customize strokes with simple brush settings and a color palette. Users can smooth freehand strokes to create perfect geometric shapes, mirror, transform, and group strokes. Importing images for reference and viewing sketches in augmented reality upon completion are also supported. The app exports sketches in 2D or 3D formats, allowing users to capture images as PNG or JPEG, record videos as animated GIFs, or export 3D models as glTF or OBJ files.
In addition to being a native iPad app, Feather is available as a web application, allowing its use on devices running Windows, Linux, or Android. The software also runs in the Chrome browser with some nuances.
Feather 1.3 is compatible with iPadOS 15.0 on iPad and the Chrome browser on other devices. The basic app is free, but upcoming paid subscriptions, Plus and Teams, will provide enhanced import and export capabilities, unlimited version history, and access control to shared projects.
