Autograph 2023.11 by Left Angle

Soft

Released earlier this year, Autograph is considered a next-generation tool for motion design and VFX. Similar to After Effects, it employs a layer-based compositing model, and its timeline comprises a standard layer stack and a dope sheet, but it merges them with a 3D mode for working with 3D assets. The 3D workflow is based on Universal Scene Description (USD), and the software includes its own real-time physics-based renderer called Filament. Autograph emphasizes ease of use: its generator system is described as a simpler alternative to node graphs, and modifiers are positioned as an easier alternative to expressions.

However, the most significant aspect is that Autograph is the "first software for creating responsive video," with a workflow geared towards artists who need to realize projects in various resolutions and aspect ratios.
Autograph 2023.11 has "completely revamped" its vector graphics and text engine. New features in the vector graphics engine include a new shape layer system, the ability to organize 2D shapes into shape groups, and instances for shape creation. The new generator for tables and outlines draws vector contours based on CSV files for data-driven animation. Additionally, a range of new modifiers has been introduced, allowing users to manipulate shapes using procedural noise or according to audio mix frequencies.

The new text engine is equipped with a Text panel for editing text, supporting individual character or paragraph-based style adjustments and text alignment. All text formatting parameters are animatable, and the new text path generator transforms text into deformable, animatable paths for creating more intricate effects.
This update also expands Autograph's audio tools: imported audio files are now displayed in a separate, dedicated section of the timeline synchronized with the image section. The new Audio Mix container allows blending audio tracks, and nests can be created using one Audio Mix as a sub-track within another. Additionally, new modifiers such as Channel Pan and Curve Equalizer for audio filtering have been introduced. For procedural animation generation from audio, the new Audio Analyzer Generator uses the frequency spectrum of the track to control any real-time animatable parameter.

Autograph 2023.11 has also received a significant list of workflow improvements, particularly in animation controls. The new Timeline Work Areas system allows defining specific playback ranges. The keyframe editing panel is now available in both the Dope Sheet and Curve Editor.
The software has also introduced a CPU renderer, serving as a fallback option for rendering projects on machines lacking GPU capabilities, such as CPU-only rendering nodes. Currently, it supports only Autograph's 2D features, with 3D support planned for the "next release." Furthermore, Autograph aligns with the current CY2023 specification for the VFX Reference Platform and now supports Rocky Linux, widely used as a successor to CentOS.

Autograph is compatible with Windows 10 and above, Ubuntu 20.04 and above, RHEL/Rocky Linux 8 and above, as well as macOS 10.15 and higher. For macOS 11.0 and above, the software natively supports Apple Silicon processors.
Perpetual licenses for Autograph Creator, available for users with an annual income of less than $1 million, cost $945; the rental option is $35 per month or $315 annually. Autograph Studio perpetual licenses are priced at $1795; the rental option is $59 per month or $599 annually.
