The release of Rebelle 7 has taken place
Rebelle was first released in 2015 and simulates the behavior of real watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint, including the flow of liquid and color mixing based on pigments. The software can also replicate dry materials like pencils, chalk, and markers, while commercial add-on packs reproduce the texture of real paper, canvas, and lithographic stones. Recent updates have expanded the feature set with more traditional drawing and image manipulation tools, including Liquify and AI-based Warp tools.
The main feature exclusive to Rebelle 7's Pro version is the new metallic material system. It integrates with the Oil and Acrylic tool, simulating the appearance of real metallic paints but comes with its own color palette and brush set. Users can control material appearances using properties such as reflectivity, scale, or strength. Additionally, realistic lighting and shadows react to the metallic surface when the canvas is moved or paint layers are transformed, as demonstrated above.
All other new features in Rebelle 7 are available in both versions, expanding the toolkit for working with natural materials and image editing. The interaction between paints and paper has been reworked: a new ray-tracing-based surface analysis system allows paints to more accurately respond to paper height maps.
Existing brushes have been revamped: oil brushes now blend more accurately at lower opacity values and come with new presets simulating "smearing" and "dirt" effects.
The Brush Creator now offers new options for creating custom brushes, including the use of background textures to add graininess to a brush or employing a secondary brush to modify the primary one.
New image editing features include a standard filter layer system for precise adjustments like color balance and brightness/contrast. The update also adds the ability to fill layers or selections with color gradients, new "Deform" and "Perspective" tools for transforming image layers, and the option to soften selections.
For geometric shapes within the "Ruler" tool, new options for parallel lines or ellipses have been introduced. Additionally, users can now import vector drawings in SVG format to use as contours for drawing effects, as demonstrated above.
Workflow enhancements and performance improvements include a new library system that allows users to save custom resources used in the image within the Rebelle project file (.reb). Rebelle also now natively supports Apple Silicon processors, which should enhance performance on current Mac computers with M-series chips.
Rebelle 7 is available for Windows 10 and above, and macOS 10.15 and above. Rebelle 7 is priced at $89.99, while Rebelle 7 Pro is priced at $149.99.
