Nick Callen released Plasticity 1.4

Plasticity, released in April and coined as "CAD for artists," is an optimized software designed for NURBS modeling. The program aims to be a cost-effective and artist-friendly alternative to tools like MoI - which Cullen refers to as a "huge inspiration" - and Fusion 360, catering to both concept art and industrial design. It features an optimized user interface that minimizes clutter on the screen with context-sensitive widgets and pop-up panels. Additionally, it employs key bindings and selection modes familiar to Blender users.

For those creating models for manufacturing, the key changes in Plasticity 1.4 introduce new commands: Dimension and Measure. The Dimension command sets absolute dimensions of model parts, including distances between faces, primitive sizes, as well as radii of circles, cones, cylinders, and fillets. The Measure command enables the creation of 3D annotations that display the distance between two points on the model, simply by clicking on them within the viewport. Annotations align with axes and update automatically when the model is edited.

The update also introduces new options for creating 2D curves, including Tangent Circle and Tangent Arc, as well as Offset Vertex for adding new vertices to curves. Workflow improvements include Blender-style scene navigation support, including [Alt]-MMB for view centering, and the ability to hold [Alt] while orbiting for snapping to an orthogonal view.
For Studio licensed users, changes include support for importing FBX, DWG, and DXF file formats. The latter two are available only on Windows and Linux. Additionally, Plasticity now supports input devices like 3DConnexion's SpaceMouse.

Plasticity 1.4 is available for Windows 10 and above, Ubuntu 22.04 and above for Linux, and macOS 12.0 and above, running on both Intel and Apple Silicon Mac. The update is free for existing users. Indie perpetual licenses with node-locked pricing are priced at $149 and allow importing and exporting OBJ, STEP, and Parasolid XT file formats. Studio licenses support a wider range of file formats and are priced at $299.
