Author’s comment:
Standard wooden handguard with a gas tube cover for the shortened version of AK-74.
It has an interesting shape and materials - plywood and metal with black paint cover.
Originally, this was just a part of the full AKS-74U project, but luckily, this handguard became the subject of a TWR Discord challenge. Toward the end, I decided not to limit myself to the deadlines and instead put extra effort into practicing wood texturing - one of the most challenging materials in weapon art.
In the end, this project gave me a ton of experience in both texturing and rendering.
The high-poly was made in Blender with subdivision, followed by additional sculpting there as well. Baking and rendering were done in Marmoset Toolbag, textured in spec/gloss in Substance Painter. A base mask for plywood layers was also created in Blender.
