"Project Bernini" - a new generative model of artificial intelligence from Autodesk

Soft

Among artificial intelligence technologies for creating 3D models, Project Bernini is remarkable for the diversity of input data it accepts. Instead of generating 3D meshes from textual prompts or deriving them from images or videos, it works with text, images, voxels, and point clouds. The AI model, built upon Make-A-Shape, an earlier work of the Autodesk Research AI Lab, has been trained on "10 million publicly available shapes," including CAD models and organic forms.

The first is more evident in the video above, where it shows how Project Bernini generates a series of objects with solid surfaces, including a chair, a shovel, and a water pitcher.
Autodesk describes itself as a company originally "focused on creating functional 3D structures, as products built or manufactured based on these models must work in the real world." In its current state, the artificial intelligence model seems better suited for studying forms than for creating high-quality assets. The demonstration video shows simple 3D shapes with relatively low detail. According to Autodesk, it will become "increasingly useful... when trained on larger and higher-quality professional datasets," citing examples such as buildings, car structures, and game characters.
Project Bernini is still "strictly experimental" and not available for public use. Autodesk has not announced when it will be publicly available or with which products and services it will be integrated. The only existing application shown in the video is 3ds Max; however, it seems to be intended for editing a model exported from Project Bernini rather than the generative AI process itself.
