The word "tephra" derives from Greek and means "ash". Volcanologists describe tephra as solid material of all sizes explosively ejected from a volcano into the atmosphere. Various terms are used to describe airborne volcanic ejecta. Large fragments are called bombs if they were ejected during the eruption in a semi-solid, or partial molten, condition while blocks are ejected during the eruption in a solid state.
