What if the Soviet answer to the German P.1000 Ratte had been a land fortress of its own?
Steel Colossus is a fictional Soviet super-heavy tank set in an alternate-history version of the 1940s. Conceived as a counter to the P.1000 Ratte, it was designed to breach fortified defensive lines, support advancing troops, and confront enemy vehicles of comparable scale.
Its design combines massive armor and wide tracks with a single main gun, two anti-aircraft guns, and multiple machine-gun positions. Access ladders, walkways, and maintenance platforms emphasize its scale—a vehicle its crew would navigate almost like a ship.
I developed Steel Colossus as a personal art project and a playable prototype in Unreal Engine 5. My goal was to go beyond a static presentation and bring the machine to life through vehicle movement, animated tracks, turret rotation, and gun elevation.
The project began with AI-assisted visual exploration. Concept references were generated with ChatGPT based on my prompts and used as a starting point for the model. I created the 3D model, UV layout, textures, and presentation. The in-engine systems were implemented with substantial technical guidance and troubleshooting assistance from ChatGPT, alongside Blueprint inspection and editing assistance from Codex.
Technical overview:
• Approximately 818k triangles — full vehicle assembly, preliminary count
• 3 materials: main vehicle material with 4K textures, glass with 1K textures, and a masked material with 1K textures
• 13 UDIM tiles for the main vehicle material
• Engine: Unreal Engine 5
• Presentation renders: Marmoset Toolbag
