Author’s comment:
Development of an exterior location (a city block with a pizzeria and parking lot) for an existing mobile project (in operation since 2019). The main challenge was creating a high-quality visual environment while maintaining strict performance on a wide range of mobile devices.
What was accomplished:
- Mobile optimization: Strict control over polygon count and material count. Use of efficient texture atlases to minimize draw calls.
- Modular Architecture: The entire location is assembled using a modular principle (walls, road sections, environmental elements), allowing for quick changes to the city layout and conserving video memory.
- Gameplay navigation: The design is tailored to traffic mechanics. Clear road markings, logical entrances/exits, and NavMesh baking for AI traffic are included. - Lighting & Performance: Static lighting setup with baked shadows to achieve a clean visual style (Baked Lighting Workflow), which is critical for mobile GPUs.
Collision Setup: Collision setup for correct vehicle interaction with environment objects without unnecessary calculations.
