Personal work "Grieving for Paulie" by a plastic anatomy teacher Alexander Tsibulsky. One of Alexander's favorite approaches is working from dark, that is, from a large mark or silhouette. This approach came to sculpture from painting, and Alexander learned it during his university drawing classes. The hunched silhouette of the character conveys grief and sorrow over the loss of a loved one. The elongated proportions create a sense of awkwardness and suffering, and the heavy lower part of the composition anchors the figure, drawing it in, and demonstrating the heavy burden of someone who mourns and lives in the past. In his sculpting workshops at Sculpt Art, Alexander teaches how to think like a sculptor and imbue your works with meaning using artistic tools such as rhythm, composition, proportions, lines, contrasts, and textures.
