Author’s comment:
The ruins of ancient Syria have lost their grandeur. The idea to depict this in the art was inspired by the theme of Palmyra, when the famous arch was destroyed. At one time, the Arch of Palmyra was the main attraction; it is very ancient, erected in the 3rd century.
The arch is depicted as a monumental creation. It covers the entire visible area, even its top eclipses the sky. Soldiers froze under the arch, given the command to fight their way through the patrols to the oil installations visible on the horizon. The perspective is designed so that against the background of the arch everything else seems miniature. Therefore, a helicopter is just a bug.
The architecture was sculpted in ZBrush and optimized there. There were still too many polygons to create UV unwrapping, but this is not a problem if you use the right software (RizomUV). The characters are made with a simple rig, just to pose them. I wanted to make a precise sky, with the right lighting and natural clouds. Terragen software handled this.
The rendering took place in parts - the PC power was not enough for one pass for the entire scene. They were then stitched together in Photoshop.
