Vasily Gordeevich Yakovenko a participant in the Great Patriotic War as commander of the artillery battery of the 262nd Rifle Regiment of the 184th Dukhovshchinsky Rifle Division of the 39th Army of the Kalinin Front, lieutenant. He was buried in the town of Dukhovshchina, Smolensk region. Vasily Yakovenko's battery in the last battle for him repelled a fierce enemy attack, destroying over three hundred Hitlerites, knocked out two guns, destroyed several machine guns. The next day, fighting unfolded on the outskirts of Smolensk, and the city was taken.
