Blender 5.3 frees Grease Pencil from mode switching

Soft Blender

Blender 5.3 changes how you work with Grease Pencil in two places at once. Strokes are now selected and edited right in the drawing mode, without switching to Edit Mode, and the view inside the camera — that very «canvas» for a 2D artist — can be tilted around the view axis and mirrored.

The version is in beta: the beta runs until November 4, 2026, with the release expected on November 10, 2026.

Draw Mode is no longer just for drawing

Draw Mode has gained:

  • the Lasso, Box, Circle and Pick selection tools;
  • a new Stroke menu with copy, paste, delete and transforms — move, rotate and scale;
  • a cyclic strokes option for the Draw tool;
  • support for Unified Paint Settings for radius, strength and color — the toggles are available in the context menu and the side panel.

One limitation worth knowing in advance: only whole strokes can be selected.

Rolling and mirroring the camera view

The view can now be rolled while inside the camera — that is, exactly where Grease Pencil does its drawing. A separate operator for resetting the view roll has been added. The view inside the camera can also be mirrored.

Carver cuts strokes and fills, and Fill takes several regions at once

The new Carver tool in Draw Mode performs a boolean subtraction along the lasso outline: it cuts both strokes and fills, automatically creating holes in them when needed.

The Fill tool has received multi-region filling: you drag a path with the mouse, and all the regions it crosses are filled as one. For coloring the frames of frame-by-frame animation, this removes the most monotonous part of the process.

In addition: material gradients can use the general gradient system instead of only two colors, rendering of intersecting holes has been improved, and the Pen Tool in Edit Mode has received improved selection and the ability to ignore it when extruding with Alt held. The full list of changes is collected in the release notes; builds and the release date are on the official Blender 5.3 page.

Why the modes are being cut back right now

In previous years the Grease Pencil module spent its effort on the foundation: the engine was rewritten from scratch, and the main goal of that work was feature parity with the old system rather than new capabilities — the Python API changed, the data was restructured. After that came targeted improvements to fills and brushes.

Only then, judging by the set of changes in 5.3, did the turn come for the structure of the work itself: features are being moved out of specialized modes into Draw Mode, meaning the modes are gradually being tied to the process rather than to the data type. What made it into 5.3 looks like the first stages of that plan rather than finished work — selection is still limited to whole strokes.

The demand probably comes from real production: series and commercials are made with Grease Pencil, and there switching modes dozens of times per session costs working time. If the trend holds, Blender will keep shifting from a 3D package with 2D capabilities toward a tool where an artist's habits from two-dimensional editors require no relearning. The side effect for studios is predictable too: some of the add-ons that papered over these gaps will become redundant, and their maintenance will have to be reconsidered.

What lies behind this turn of Grease Pencil toward a mode without switching: complaints from 2D animators, competition with TVPaint, the accumulated debt of the old module?
