In Substance 3D Painter 12.2, the bake cage is painted with a brush

Soft Substance Painter

Adobe has released Substance 3D Painter 12.2. The main change concerns baking: cage distance can now be set directly on the model — with a brush at per-pixel precision, or through Polygon Fill across entire sub-objects at once. This makes it possible to find and fix local projection errors before the next bake, instead of altering the whole cage and checking the result every time.

The problem this solves is familiar to anyone who transfers detail from high-poly to low-poly. The cage determines how far Painter searches for geometry beyond the low-poly mesh. If the cage sits too close, some of the detail won't make it into the map. If it is pushed too far out, the baked texture will pull in information from surfaces that shouldn't be there.

A local fix instead of another round of re-bakes

The point of the new feature is that the projection error has become visible and addressable: cage inflation is set where it's needed, and by as much as it's needed. For production, that means time saved on bake iterations.

The step continues the line started in version 12.1: that release brought automatic re-baking and the ability to paint skew correction directly on the low-poly. Now the second typical source of baking artifacts has been tackled the same way. Adobe describes this as a continuation of its work on a more interactive bake process in Painter.

Polygon Fill no longer selects what isn't visible

The polygon selection tool gained three modes. Rectangular Marquee lets you drag a box over the area you need, Polygon Loop selects a continuous face loop, and Partial Polygon Loop selects only part of one, for when the full loop grabs too much.

The most practical-looking option is Visible Polygons Only: a rectangular selection no longer passes straight through the model and picks up polygons on the far side. It sounds like a small thing, but this is exactly what ruined geometry masking in the viewport on dense meshes and on assets with intersecting parts.

The second navigation convenience is Texture Set Highlighting. Hovering over a texture set highlights the corresponding geometry in the viewport, and Ctrl/Cmd + Alt combined with hovering over the model works the other way around: it shows which set a particular part belongs to. This is most useful when opening unfamiliar projects and when working with characters and props split across many materials.

Glass and liquids in preview have become more honest

The display of semi-transparent materials in the viewport has been improved through Order Independent Transparency. When several transparent surfaces overlap — glass, ice, liquids — Painter sorts them more correctly, and the real-time preview conveys the intended look of the material more accurately.

Substance 3D Painter 12.2 is already available; Adobe has published the full technical breakdown and the list of changes and fixes in the official release notes.

Where the texturing pipeline is heading

The release came out without headline features: the bulk of the work went into eliminating routine — manual setup, repeated checks, restarting processes. Against the backdrop of the industry's discussion of generative tools, Adobe is investing in the less conspicuous part of the pipeline — reducing the number of "set it up — bake — look — redo" cycles.

This is probably because the bottleneck in texturing has long since stopped being the software's capabilities and has become the iterations. Baking remains one of the most fragile stages of the pipeline: the error is discovered neither where it was made nor right away. Moving such settings into the viewport, where a parameter is visible and fixed with a brush, follows the same logic by which sculpting once displaced manual vertex editing.

If the trend continues, the next candidates for conversion to paint mode look to be the remaining bake parameters that still live in dialog fields. For modelers and texture artists, this is gradually changing the nature of the work: understanding why the projection breaks is still necessary, but fixing it comes down to a few strokes rather than a long search for the right values.

Are you ready to entrust to a brush what you used to fix by hand in the cage? Or will you go back to Maya for baking anyway?
