Open-source SketchUp alternative opens up to third-party plugins

Soft

IngeTrazo, a free 3D modeller for architecture, engineering and design, has given users the ability to write their own extensions. One of them is the ComfyUI Viewport Renderer, which processes the contents of the viewport through ComfyUI. This is the moment after which a small project stops depending solely on the pace of a single developer: the community builds out the functionality too.

The program positions itself as an open alternative to SketchUp. What sets it apart from the original is native operation on Linux, where engineers and architects have almost none of the familiar conceptual design tools. Builds are also available for Windows and macOS.

What the modeller offers engineers

The engine guarantees watertight solids: a model assembled in IngeTrazo can be sent further down the pipeline without manual geometry repair. Every action is a single undo step, and constructions pass through a watertightness check; if the code of an extension or the assistant crashes, the document stays intact.

The rest of the functionality is built around project work:

  • drawing layout — composing sheets to scale with PDF output;
  • real terrain — satellite imagery, elevation data, drone material and GPS points;
  • a BIM layer — optional and still in development;
  • a link to Blender for rendering visualizations.

The built-in AI assistant is a story of its own. It builds geometry with the same engine the user does: from a task description it assembles a sequence of operations — rotations, extrusions, Python via the IngeTrazo action API — and the deterministic engine executes it, leaving the model editable by hand. The assistant lives in the AI tab in the side panel and runs on the user's own key: Groq (with a free tier), Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, DeepSeek and local models via Ollama are supported. The assistant receives viewport screenshots and corrects constructions based on what it sees, and in the mode with an attached photo it recreates the object from the shot, using dimensions set by the user. The MCP bridge makes it possible to drive the modeller from Claude Desktop and Claude Code: the agent draws, makes queries and sees the model in the open application. For archviz studios this is a different type of automation than the usual scripts: the command is phrased in words, and the result remains editable geometry.

Why a project like this has appeared right now

IngeTrazo is written by Peruvian civil engineer and Linux enthusiast Marco Sumari Telles — a situation typical of the current wave of open CAD tools. The project addresses a problem small studios and independent designers know well: the subscription model of commercial packages and the absence of native Linux versions force you to keep a separate Windows machine for the sake of a single program. An open license removes both barriers at once, and the working logic familiar from SketchUp cuts down relearning time.

The risks of such a solution are just as clear. The project is developing quickly and largely through the efforts of one author, and the BIM layer is not finished yet, so it suits one-off sketches and presentations better than a long-term project archive.

If the trend holds, the main winners will be those working at the intersection of engineering and visualization: a guaranteed watertight model goes to Blender for rendering without a geometry repair stage. Things will get harder for mid-price vendors, where the subscription was justified mainly by drafting convenience. An open extension system amplifies the effect: it was through plugins that the ecosystems around Blender and SketchUp itself grew back in the day, and here an AI renderer turned out to be among the first third-party modules. You can download builds and look through the documentation on the IngeTrazo website.
