DaVinci Resolve 21.1: integration with AI assistants and new scripting API methods — only in the paid Studio

Soft DaVinci Resolve

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 21.1 — a major update to the 21 branch for macOS, Windows, Windows ARM and Linux. The company claims more than a hundred new tools and controls for speeding up editing and colour grading, and among the key items it names integration with AI assistants and expanded support for photography and camera formats.

Until now, artificial intelligence in Resolve had been a set of separate tools: Magic Mask, IntelliSearch, AI Face Age Transformer, AI Blemish Removal, AI Slate ID, a speech generator. Each of them is invoked manually from the interface. In 21.1 they are joined by integration with AI assistants — Blackmagic lists it in the description of DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 together with two dozen new scripting API methods and built-in console support. Exactly which assistants are supported is not specified in the description of the builds.

Scripting and assistant integration went to the paid edition

Blackmagic drew the line between the versions directly in the description of the builds. Individual MultiMaster trims on the Color page, integration with AI assistants and 20 new API methods with console support are listed only for DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1; those lines are absent from the description of the free version. Studio requires a licence dongle key, a Blackmagic Cloud licence or an activation code, and technical support for the free edition of version 21 is provided only through the Blackmagic Design community forums.

Both versions get a common set of changes: expanded support for photography on the Photo page, improved multicam control, an updated trimming editor, more than 25 new Krokodove tools for working with shapes and 3D, updated Fusion macro controls, new project archiving and media management options. Blackmagic Cloud Presentations gained subtitle support, annotation sharing and replies to comments — approving changes stays inside the project.

The Photo page and working with cameras

The Photo page, introduced in version 21, brings Resolve's colour grading to still images: primary correction, curves, qualifiers, power windows and the node editor, cropping and reframing at the original resolution, albums, LightBox mode with a view of the whole collection, content search via AI IntelliSearch, support for Resolve FX and OpenFX plug-ins, as well as collaboration through Blackmagic Cloud. In 21.1 the support for photography and cameras on this page has been expanded.

Camera Controls make it possible to connect a Sony or Canon camera directly to Resolve and shoot tethered: set ISO, shutter speed and white balance, monitor in live view and save shooting presets, with the shots going straight into an album. For a photographer shooting video and stills at the same time, this means the material from one shoot can be kept and graded in a single project.

What has changed on the Color page and in Fusion

On the Color page, the Studio version has gained individual MultiMaster trims. The MultiMaster manager makes it possible to get several HDR and SDR masters from a single timeline: when it is enabled, additional layers for trims appear in the node editor, so the timeline can be colour-managed for each output standard and all variants rendered in one pass. Other tools on the page include render in place mode in the Magic Mask palette, a layer-list view of nodes and grade versions for clip groups.

Fusion has received more than 25 new Krokodove tools for working with shapes and 3D and an updated macro editor with an inspector view that simplifies configuring and publishing macros. Fusion Studio 21.1 was released separately: besides the Krokodove tools, it claims support for a new material node with multiple inputs, macro editor improvements, MultiText layer alignment and refinements to metadata variables.

Where to download

The update is available on the DaVinci Resolve support page. Alongside Resolve, Fusion Studio 21.1 and DaVinci Resolve Project Server 21.1 have been published — the latter adds the ability for several users on different workstations to open and work on one and the same project simultaneously. The list of updates also includes Fairlight Live 1.1 with support for the Fairlight Live Audio Panel 10. The basic version of Resolve remains free, DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295.

Why Blackmagic is opening Resolve outwards

In recent years the developers of editing packages have been increasing the number of built-in neural network features and competing on their quantity: version 21 of Resolve itself brought a whole set of AI tools and a separate page for photographs. Integration with AI assistants together with the expansion of the scripting API looks like a change of logic — instead of yet another button inside the interface, the vendor is exposing a controllable programmatic surface to the outside.

This differs from the approach of competitors, who embed a particular provider's model into the editor together with their own cloud infrastructure. Blackmagic sells Studio on a one-time licence, and an open programmatic surface fits such a model more easily than a built-in generative service with monthly payments.

If the trend continues, the coming releases of editing and graphics packages will be judged, among other things, by the completeness of their programming interface: the more operations available to an assistant, the higher the chance that a layer of third-party automation will grow around the application. For professionals this probably means a shift in demand — understanding APIs and being able to build automated chains become as much of a working skill as command of keyboard shortcuts. And the fact that extended scripting together with assistant integration is available only in the paid edition indicates that the vendor sees this automation as something to monetise.

Community reaction

The reaction on X is still early: the announcement of DaVinci Resolve 21.1 came out on the morning of 8 September, but the split is already visible. Editors and developers in the quotes of the official post are mostly pleased: the focus is not on yet another neural network effect, but on the built-in MCP server, through which assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude will be able to control the program. Separate thanks go to the practical small things — transitions on an adjustment clip, saving inspector presets, keyboard shortcuts for the render queue. Some people immediately ask how deeply the models will really take over the editor and whether the workflows will fall apart once the discounted request limits run out. In parallel there is outright rejection: some authors demand that the integration be rolled back, believing that Blackmagic Design is sliding to the level of Adobe and mixing low-grade generation into editing. In the first hours there is almost no argument about the fact that the link with assistants and the new scripting API methods remain only in the paid Studio — the argument is over whether AI is needed in an editor at all.

“Built-in MCP, transitions on an adjustment clip, saving inspector presets, keyboard shortcuts for the render queue. Thank God”

“Personally, the main thing in this update for me is the built-in MCP server for connecting with AI assistants”

— @happydayz_taq (X)

“No, no, take it back. You are supposed to be better than Adobe, not stoop to their level with this junk — that way you stop being defenders of creativity”

— @JThomasOfficial (X)

What lies behind Blackmagic's decision to lock the AI integration and the new API methods inside Studio: the cost of AI computation, the search for subscription revenue, a bet on professionals?
