Rigging studio gives away a free Maya rig: Soft IK, space switching and facial controllers

Interesting From The Web Autodesk Maya

STUDIOJOIN, a studio specializing in rigging, has made a character rig for Maya freely available. Anyone can download it, but the license limits its use to non-commercial tasks: exercises, animation challenges, personal demo reels and short films.

The set of controllers was put together by a team that does rigging professionally, and released as a learning resource.

What the rig can do:

  • scaling the character as a whole;
  • IK/FK switching;
  • World/Local space switching;
  • Soft IK — for smoother limb movement;
  • visibility control for individual facial controllers.

The facial part isn't just controllers: the package also includes the facial expressions themselves.

The studio released a breakdown of the rig as a separate video on its JOINUNIVERSE channel — it shows the rig's structure and capabilities in detail. The video is in Japanese, but the automatic English subtitles are quite readable.

The file is distributed through the Basic Rigging page. Maya 2023 or newer is required. Commercial use is not covered by the license.

Why free rigs have become a marketing tool for studios

The giveaway fits a long-standing practice: studios and individual riggers release characters for free because for an animator a rig is a ticket into a portfolio, while for the rig's authors it is a way to show their technical craft without NDAs and production materials. A demo reel shot on someone else's rig then works as a showcase for whoever made that rig.

The license restriction is probably connected to this as well. Non-commercial status protects the studio from a situation where its technical work ends up in someone else's paid project, while not getting in the way of the educational scenario. Judging by how the release is presented — with a video breakdown of the rig's structure — it is closer to an educational initiative.

Against the background of more and more such free rigs appearing, access to a solid technical base is gradually ceasing to be an advantage: the work of beginning animators is increasingly distinguished only by the quality of the animation itself.
