The release of LiquiGen 0.1 by JangaFX
First announced in 2020, LiquiGen is the counterpart to EmberGen, a popular JangaFX software for real-time fluid simulation, focusing specifically on liquids rather than fire and smoke. Initially, the news about the software generated significant interest within the community websites, as users hoped it would become a faster and more interactive alternative to existing tools like RealFlow.
Despite being far from ready for a full release, the release notes for LiquiGen 0.1 from JangaFX outline the key features of the program. It includes a real-time sparse liquid solver described as a "pseudo-infinite APIC" solver - meaning it utilizes the Affine Particle-in-Cell method for simulation. APIC is generally considered more stable and less prone to artifacts for fine-scale modeling compared to the FLIP (Fluid Implicit Particle) method used in many large-scale liquid solvers.
LiquiGen supports real-time particle meshing, allowing users to export simulation results to other DCC applications as Alembic caches or export the particles themselves. Users can use static or animated meshes as emitters and colliders, and influence fluid motion with forces such as turbulence and resistance. The program comes with two built-in renderers: a rasterized renderer for quick previews and a ray-traced renderer for high-quality results.
The program supports point, directional, and volumetric lights, as well as HDR lighting, but the material system is currently described as "rudimentary." The initial alpha version primarily serves as a preview for users of JangaFX software and has several known limitations. Importing meshes is restricted to eight meshes, and only "very well-behaved" meshes are likely to work correctly.
There are also rendering issues: path tracing is not yet supported on AMD GPUs in Linux, and it's not supported at all on Intel GPUs. JangaFX plans a broader public alpha release by the end of the year.
In addition to performance and stability improvements, future plans include support for surface tension, viscosity, foam, splashes, and bubbles, as well as mesh extraction based on masks.
LiquiGen 0.1 is available to users of the JangaFX Suite package for $399.99, which includes EmberGen and the new real-time terrain generation tool GeoGen. The initial alpha version supports Windows and Linux, as well as systems with AMD and NVIDIA GPUs.
JangaFX has not yet announced the pricing or final release date for LiquiGen. However, the company's other programs are available both as perpetual licenses and through subscriptions.
