Public beta version of GeoGen by JangaFX
GeoGen is a tool designed for creating height maps and 3D terrains in real-time. It was developed as a side project between the ongoing work on real-time modeling tools like EmberGen and LiquiGen, initially known as SceneryGen. JangaFX describes it as a successor to Grand Designer, a 'procedural universe generator' initially created by Gil Damazio, who currently works at the company as a research engineer.
"Originally, JangaFX presented it as 'built like Substance [3D] Designer, but for terrain and planets,' although the company's website now expresses it less explicitly, noting that 'if you're familiar with some industry-standard procedural material editors, you'll feel at home using it.'
GeoGen allows the creation of terrain through a procedural nodal-based process. It includes a 'wide range of source, modifier, and filter nodes,' as well as 'all the parameters needed for fine-tuning everything - from noise to erosion.' The arrangement of terrain elements can be controlled using masks and support for 'familiar blending operations.' It's worth noting that there are several competing applications for creating terrain, but GeoGen's distinctive feature is its ability to generate entire planets. Planets can be generated 'at arbitrary scales with full atmospheric support.'"
GeoGen also features 'a robust rendering for visual work,' with rendering options including ray tracing, lightmaps, and tracing, allowing users to choose between speed and visual quality. It exports 'game-ready data,' and terrains can be exported as 3D meshes or as height maps, color maps, and texture masks at resolutions up to 8192 x 8192px. Planets can be exported as 3D meshes or as eight-sided or equirectangular maps.
GeoGen 0.1.3 is compatible with Windows 10 and above, as well as Linux. A macOS version will be released 'soon.' It's currently available in a commercial alpha version. The final release date has not yet been announced.
The perpetual node-locked license of GeoGen is priced at $299.99, while a subscription plan requires 18 consecutive payments of $19.99 per month. A 14-day trial version is also available.
