Boris FX has acquired SynthEyes
First introduced two decades ago by computer vision and robotics researcher Dr. Russell Anderson, the SynthEyes system rapidly found its place in VFX pipelines due to its blend of speed, accuracy, and accessibility. SynthEyes has been utilized in films and series such as "Black Panther," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Foundation," "Stranger Things," and "Game of Thrones."
This standalone 3D tracking application enables artists to perform 3D set extensions, place CG characters within scenes, and animate them through motion capture. It accommodates a wide array of shooting types, including stereoscopic and 360-degree virtual reality, and exports seamlessly to most major 3D compositing applications.
Prior to acquiring SynthEyes, Boris FX had acquired collections of plugins for VFX and motion graphics, such as Sapphire, and a rotoscoping and painting tool, Silhouette. Now, the company aims to "leverage 3D technologies" across its other brands, similar to what was done with Mocha - a planar tracking technology acquired in 2014 and now integrated into Boris FX products.
Russ Andersson will "remain in his leadership role" within the new unified development team. "I look forward to starting this new chapter," he comments. "Many of our artists already use Boris FX products for visible and invisible visual effects." SynthEyes is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS. The current stable release is SynthEyes 2304.
The software is available in the form of perpetual and temporary licenses. The full list of scenes can be viewed via the link.
