Giant waterfalls and indoor gardens at the new Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore, designed by Safdie Architects, are almost complete. The airport will officially open its doors on April 17, 2019.

Jewel Changi Airport combines a modern shopping center and paradise garden, reflecting the "heart and soul" of Changi. Jewel project is creating a new paradigm for airport design. It focuses on the travelers’ comfort, combining the functionality of the airport with magnificent nature, facilities for relaxing at the waterfall, the market and shops, restaurants and even a hotel.

The project is connected to the city’s public transport network and has open access to Terminal 1, as well as to Terminals 2 and 3 via the pedestrian bridges. Jewel attracts passengers and tourists, as well as residents of Singapore itself. The airport of 134,000m² will be open to everyone.

The highest indoor waterfall in the world, called The Rain Vortex, goes down seven floors from the central aperture on a domed roof, with fascinating lighting and projections at night.

During frequent and severe thunderstorms in the region, recycled natural rainwater will flow at a rate of more than 10,000 gallons per minute, which contributes to the cooling and air flow of the landscape environment, collecting a significant portion of the rainwater for reuse in the building.

If the project had participated in the MIPIM Awards 2019, it would have definitely received one of the awards.
