Chapel of Sound | Unique architectural project

OPEN Architecture has designed a cave-like building, which will house a semi-open amphitheater, an open stage, observation deck and much more in a valley of North Beijing.

Called the Chapel of Sound, the 790 m² squared building is located in a valley in Chengde, China. This valley is famous having remains of the Great Wall. The building is currently under construction.

The structure is designed as a semi-open concert hall, resting at the bottom of the valley, as if an odd shaped boulder fell there a long, long time ago. The cascade building consists entirely of concrete, mixed with crushed local mineral-rich rocks. It has the shape of an upside-down conical tower.

The architects designed the interior based on acoustic considerations, especially for musical performances, but the hall can also serve as a space for pacified leisure or social gatherings.

A large hole at the top of the building along with smaller holes of various shapes in its walls offer stunning views of the sky and the surrounding valley, as well as the various sounds of nature.

The layered form of the construction was inspired by the sedimentary rock formation of the surrounding mountains, but retaining the feeling that it was created by human hands and avoiding the simple imitation of natural stone.

Against the backdrop of coarse and cave-like space, the details have been carefully thought out to provide quiet comfort while visitors relax and listen to the orchestra or lulling sounds of nature.

Finally, climbing up the winding stairs, visitors will suddenly find themselves on a plateau on top of the concert hall. There they can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the valley and the Great Wall of China.

It is amazing how in the modern world of megacities and technological progress, people still seek to retire and enjoy nature in its original form.
