Animation doesn’t count | Why only Disney gets Oscars

A Twitter campaign to promote Disney's Incredibles 2 on the eve of the Oscar awards did not go according to plan. Fans of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse trolled both the studio and awards, outraged by the unfair attitude of the "Academy" towards the film.

The people on Twitter are not the same people who vote at the Academy Awards. If this wasn’t clear to the Walt Disney Company, then after last weekend when they tried to use a social network to promote Incredibles 2 for the nomination “Best Animated Film”, it is now.

Over the past 11 years, Disney has practically dominated this category, so it’s not surprising that they would like to continue with Incredibles 2. Why they decided to use Twitter to promote it is another matter. Certainly the studio has already spent a large sum on advertising, publications, banners on film websites and events for the Academy Award voters. Twitter is free, thought marketers, so why not write a couple of tweets about Incredibles 2 with positive quotes from film critics?

Within a couple of hours after posting these tweets, thousands of fans of Spider-Man: Into Spider-Verse trolled Disney in the comments while many simply posted a GIF of a stunned and bewildered Spidey.

Interestingly, despite the fact that the film is a clear contender this year and has already received dozens of awards this season, including BAFTA, Golden Globe and numerous Annie and VES awards, its Oscar chances remain dubious.

The reason why this is happening is because those who have the right to vote when choosing winners contemptuously look at animated films and refuse to treat animation with the same dignity and respect they have for filmmaking. Some voters of the "Academy" in the past have openly admitted that they didn’t even bother to watch any of the animated nominees, simply choosing those that were released by Disney or Pixar.

While this explains why Disney’s movies win almost every year, it offends animation fans who want more attention for the animation industry. The 91st Academy Awards will take place next Monday, February 25, where we will find out whether public opinion can somehow influence the choice of critics.
