Open-source 2D animation software OpenToonz 1.3 | Release

OpenToonz 1.3, a fresh update for open-source 2D animation software, has been released. The update focuses on improving stability and includes a long list of bug fixes. A few new features have been added as well.

This new version features support for Windows touchscreen via Windows Ink, a new text generator effect, and a new Separate Colors command.

In addition, MyPaint brushes will operate using its Toonz Raster Level system, which is used to separate outlines and fills, among other things.

About OpenToonz

OpenToonz is an open-source 2D animation software. It is based on the Toonz program, which was developed by Digital Video S.p.A. in Italy and customized by Ghibli, having been used in production for many years. Developer Dwango launched the OpenToonz project in collaboration with both studios.

The previous version of software 1.2 has undergone significant changes. A new horizontal timeline has been added, a new brush engine has been developed, as well as auto-tweening vector strokes and a lip sync window.

Moreover, the shader effects were improved to work more efficiently. Additionally, two new shader effects were added: a standard burn-in timecode and a pleasant Bokeh effect with blurred light controlled by a grayscale map.

OpenToonz version 1.2 (Morevna Edition) also includes an updated resizable color picker tool. The description describes the tool as similar to Photoshop’s Coolorus plugin.

Availability and system requirements

OpenToonz 1.3 is available for Windows 7+ and Mac OS X 10.9+. Morevna Edition also supports a version for Linux. The software is free to use.
