Masamune (Japanese: 五郎正宗 : Masamune, c. 1264 – 1343) was a Japanese swordsmith and master of the Japanese sword. He was probably the most famous sword maker. Masamune worked in the Sagami province, at the end of the Kamakura period. He is famous for creating a new technology for making swords (tachi and tanto) at that time, which is called Soshu. Several generations of his followers and students worked in this tradition. This technology was a way to create super-strong swords. Four strips of steel were welded together and folded together five times, resulting in 128 layers of steel in the blade. Legend has it that Masamune refused to sign his blades because they were impossible to counterfeit.
