A ghoul in Slavic mythology is a living corpse, killing people and sucking blood from them or eating them. Also, this word can be called an evil and hostile person.
According to popular beliefs, ghouls are wandering dead who during life were werewolves, sorcerers, or were excommunicated and anathematized (heretics, apostate, some criminals, such as maniacs, etc.). At night, ghouls get up from their graves and walk on the ground, due to their humanoid appearance they easily penetrate into houses and suck blood from sleeping people (they feed on that), then return to their graves - always before the cries of third roosters. According to legend, it was possible to kill a ghoul by piercing his corpse with an aspen stake. If this did not help, then the corpse was usually burned. It was believed that ghouls cause pestilence, crop failures, droughts.
The ghoul approximately corresponds to a vampire in European mythology and has much in common with the ghoul in the East Slavic tradition, however, back in the 19th century, these characters clearly differentiated in the popular mind.
The opposite of ghouls in the archaic tradition is protecting the person’s banks, personifying all the good.
Nowadays, when the myths of many nations are accessible to every person, and when many fantasy worlds have arisen, the ghoul is described in a slightly different way. Any person can be a ghoul (except for the most righteous), who did not die by his own death and is not properly buried. The ghoul is the lowest undead, but, unlike skeletons and zombies, it can arise on its own (while they must be created), it has a certain amount of reason and free will, the instinct of self-preservation, etc. The ghoul multiplies, leaving it not completely gnawed the corpses of their victims, who become (rise) new ghouls. The new ghoul does not depend on the old one, a few raised ghouls stray into the pack. Most often, ghouls appear at the site of battles, and if they are not destroyed, they can soon form an army of several hundred individuals. The most powerful ghouls eventually turn into ghouls.
