Substance 3D Modeler 1.5 is an advanced tool based on Signed Distance Fields (SDF), designed for creating both organic and hard surface models. Users can work in either virtual reality or desktop mode using a mouse and keyboard. The workflow integrates elements of sculpting and logical modeling, allowing artists to shape virtual clay-like objects and then combine or carve them using logical operations. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of creative projects, from gaming to product design.
By combining sculpting and logical modeling, Substance 3D Modeler 1.5 offers a unique approach, enabling users to create intricate models in a highly intuitive environment.
The main update in Substance 3D Modeler 1.15 is the introduction of a new workflow with primitives. This feature, initially released in the software's beta version in May, enables users to build complex hard-surface models by performing logical operations on 3D primitives. Since the beta version, Adobe has added six new combination modes for primitives: "Insertion," "Extrusion," "Groove," "Tab," "Push," and "Avoid," which allow for the creation of a wider range of models. Additionally, a new toggle for overlay types enables users to choose between smooth overlays and beveled edges.
Other enhancements in this update include a new shape-definition mode when increasing the resolution of the clay layer, alongside the existing linear and smooth modes. Users can now also adjust the resolution of the clay layer while exporting. The update also improves support for MX Ink and the Logitech VR stylus.
Substance 3D Modeler 1.15 is compatible with Windows 10 and later, as well as specific virtual reality headsets. The software is available through a subscription to the Substance 3D Collection, which costs $49.99 per month or $549.88 annually. Additionally, lifetime licenses are available for purchase on Steam for $149.99.
