Developed as a lightweight file format for 3D assets intended for use in web applications and real-time applications, glTF is one of the standards curated by The Khronos Group. Despite not gaining universal recognition, it is currently supported in DCC applications, including Blender, Unreal Engine, and After Effects. While there are several free online glTF viewers available, one of which is developed by Khronos itself, the new application enables viewing glTF files on iPad, iPhone, and Apple Silicon Mac computers.
Models can be viewed either on a regular background or in augmented reality mode, allowing users to rotate the model using touch gestures. The application supports all basic functionalities of the glTF 2.0 specification, as well as PBR materials, including new PBR extensions for transparent coatings and Draco mesh compression. It's worth noting that the application's source code is open-source. As per Khronos' intention, the code should serve as a ready-made basic viewing program for developers who have yet to support the glTF format in their applications.
Khronos glTF is compatible with iOS 16.0 and above, iPadOS 16.0 and above, and macOS 13.0 and above on Mac computers with Apple Silicon processors. The source code is available under the Apache 2.0 license.
