Author’s comment:
The concept and first sketches of the project were born during a trip to Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kuril Islands. It is like another world there: volcanic caves with frozen lava, burdocks above human height, islands and bays coming from dreams. All these things gave me thoughts about what happened and what will happen to this world, about the cyclical nature of history. Can it be that dinosaurs haven’t completely extinct, and could one day return to this world? What will happen then? My post-apocalyptic project is an answer to this question.
The incredible majestic creatures with a sad fate, dinosaurs have inspired me since childhood. I wanted to speculate how they would coexist with people.
The project took 2 months to be completed, in between regular work assignments. I aimed to study new programs and tools while doing a practical task. I used Gaea and World Creator to create mountains and hills, Phoenix FD for water, smoke, and fire, Marvelous Designer for fabrics. It was important for me to have as much as possible 3D in my project, so that I virtually did not have to resort to Photoshop or to matte-painting.
I regard each illustration as a living creature developing in the process of creation. First, an idea forms in my head, which then turns into a simple paper sketch. I gradually elaborate on it, add new details, write down thoughts next to so that I won’t forget them, because a lot of time can pass from an initial concept to its implementation. Then I start working on the project directly in 3DS Max, and sometimes work changes beyond recognition, and only a “ghost” of a concept remains from the first sketch.
It is very important that the primary idea doesn’t hold you back, so creativity should be given free rein in the process. Don't be afraid to move away from your concept, change something or discard it. That is what makes all works different, each having its own mood and atmosphere. It also partially depends on the mood that I had when created them, on where there was background music, an audiobook, or just silence accompanying my work process. And I hope that each illustration will strike a chord with you.
