Blender will support online asset libraries

This news was announced in a blog post summarizing the first workshop for the online asset project, which is still in its early stages of development. The project will introduce a new type of remote asset library alongside Blender's existing local asset library system.

Resources stored in remote libraries will be available on-demand over the internet and locally cached for reuse. They will follow the same internet access policy as extensions and will be accessible through the new Blender extension platform introduced in Blender 4.2.

Other proposed changes include support for multiple variants and views—such as different LODs and resolutions—within a single resource. These changes not only facilitate large studios in sharing standard resources across objects but also enhance Blender's capabilities "out of the box."
Future releases will include a preconfigured Online Essentials—an online asset library featuring CC0 assets that are not copyright-protected, including basic meshes, materials, and brushes. Specialized resource libraries, such as content from open Blender films, may also be available on the extension platform.

The project is still in its early stages of development, and its implementation timeline has not yet been announced. It is expected to follow the Brush Assets project, which is currently being prepared for release in Blender 4.3. This update will replace existing brush-based tools in Blender with a unified Brush tool and will allow brush presets to be stored in libraries that can be shared.
The Blender Foundation has not yet announced which version of Blender will feature support for online asset libraries. Brush libraries are expected to be introduced in Blender 4.3, which is currently in alpha testing, with a stable release anticipated in November 2024. Blender is compatible with Windows 8.1, macOS 11.2, and glibc 2.28 Linux and newer versions of the mentioned software.
