Plasticity 2024.1 has been released

Released in 2023, Plasticity, dubbed "CAD for Artists," is an optimized software for NURBS modeling. The program aims to be an affordable, artist-friendly alternative to tools like MoI - which Cullen calls "a huge inspiration" - and Fusion 360, catering to both concept art and industrial design.
The software features an optimized user interface designed to reduce clutter on the screen with context-sensitive widgets and pop-up panels. It also utilizes key bindings and selection modes familiar to Blender users.

Plasticity 2024.1 introduces a revamped surface creation workflow: in the video at the top of the news, a recreation of an old Siemens NX demonstration in Plasticity is showcased. Now, you can control CVs for trimmed and untrimmed edges directly in the viewport, and edges with visible CVs now have a "nominal" surface to facilitate direct editing. Additionally, the new Raise Degree command increases the complexity of surfaces, converting analytical surfaces into splines and increasing spline gradations. To visually simplify the workflow, the new Toggle Points command allows you to toggle the visibility of points on selected edges, curves, and bodies. The Offset Face command now supports dependent offsets - conformity to the curvature of another surface - providing a more flexible workflow compared to the existing Match Face command.

Other changes include a new "Full Fillet" parameter for fillets and scaling parameters for the Tube and Unfold commands, enabling the creation of conical shapes. The update also introduces new built-in MatCap materials, as well as the ability to use custom Matcaps.
Additionally, the Studio edition now integrates the xNURBS library for Windows and macOS. Previously, this "variational surfacing" technology was only available in paid add-ons for Rhino and SolidWorks, which currently cost between $395 and $695. Studio users also gain support for importing files from Rhino 8.
The release also marks a change in the version numbering of the program: according to the previous version numbering, this would have been Plasticity 2.0. This means that users of old Indie licenses for $99, which only included updates for version 1.x, will not receive it for free, leading to complaints in replies to the tweet announcing the release. The update is included for free in Indie licenses priced at $149, which were introduced in October last year with the release of Plasticity 1.3.

Plasticity 2024.1 is available for Windows 10 and higher, Ubuntu 22.04 and higher Linux, and macOS 12.0 and higher. It works on both Intel and Apple Silicon Mac computers. Perpetual Indie licenses with node-based binding cost $149 and allow importing and exporting files in OBJ, STEP, STL, and Parasolid XT formats. Studio licenses support a wider range of file formats and cost $299.
