Red Giant 2024.2 by Maxon with the new 3D tool Geo

The main change in Red Giant 2024.2 is Geo - a new tool for texturing, lighting, and cloning 3D objects in After Effects, designed for both motion graphics and visual effects work. Users can import 3D models in standard file formats: OBJ, FBX, GLB, glTF, DAE, C4D, and 3DS. Then, they can assign up to five materials to the models, each with its set of physically accurate properties, following the PBR (roughness-metallic) workflow. Material properties can be controlled using imported texture maps or, more importantly, using existing After Effects layers or compositions.

Geo also comes with controls for adjusting the background environment, including built-in sunlight, support for image-based lighting, and fog. For motion graphics work, built-in cloners, similar to those in MoGraph in Cinema 4D, are provided to create cube, sphere, or cylinder arrays of objects.

For visual effects and product visualization, the shadow catching system facilitates compositing rendered 3D objects with background footage. Existing tools received minor updates: the Universe effects library gained the ability to add falloff to custom blur maps in the new Bokeh plugin. Trapcode, Maxon's motion graphics and VFX plugins for After Effects, received performance updates, "enhanced" playback, and rendering in the Particular 3D particle tool. Magic Bullet received UI updates in the Looks plugin to improve color management workflow.

Red Giant 2024.2 plugins are available for Windows 10 and above and macOS 12.0 and above, compatible with After Effects 2023 and above. Some products are compatible with other host applications, including DaVinci Resolve. All products are available only through rental and are accessible via the Red Giant subscription, priced at $79 per month or $599 per year, or through the Maxon One subscription, priced at $149 per month or $1199 per year. Individual Universe subscriptions cost $30 per month or $199 per year.
