MotionBuilder 2025 by Autodesk

MotionBuilder 2025 is the largest update to the program in several years, not least because it has become the latest application to support Universal Scene Description (USD) from Pixar. The new USD plugin for MotionBuilder allows loading USD scenes, including textures and lights, and displaying them in the viewport alongside MotionBuilder data.

This workflow should enable artists working on VFX or animation projects with USD-based pipelines to animate in context. Technical artists can interact with the USD scene using Python scripts. However, there are still several key limitations, the main one being the inability to convert USD data to MotionBuilder data and vice versa: the USD scene exists solely for reference. Additionally, loading large or complex scenes "may lead to crashes," so users are advised to limit the visibility of unnecessary objects before importing into MotionBuilder. Other changes in MotionBuilder 2025 include minor workflow and performance improvements. Specifically, there is now the ability to stretch multiple selected clips in Loop mode in the Story Tool, as well as lock Global/Take time markers on the timeline to prevent them from being moved.

In addition, new shortcuts for commonly performed tasks have been added, Python scripts have been updated, and the way warning messages are displayed in MotionBuilder has been changed.

MotionBuilder 2025 is available for Windows 10 and above, as well as RHEL and Rocky Linux 8.7/9.3. The software is only available for rent, with a subscription cost of $2145 per year.
