Scene Group has introduced Cavalry 2.0
Released in 2020, the Cavalry application is a procedural animation tool that combines the power and flexibility of 3D with the ease of use of 2D. Although currently exclusively a 2D animation tool, it supports workflows familiar to 3D animators, including keyframing, curve editing, deformation, rigging, scattering, and instancing.
Scene Group also deals with 3D graphics: the company is a subdivision of Mainframe North, which developed MASH - a motion graphics toolkit for Maya. After creating images, they can be exported in various file formats, including JPEG, PNG, or SVG sequences, animated PNG, WEBM, or QuickTime clips, as well as in Lottie format.
The key changes in Cavalry 2.0 include support for cameras, allowing users to create 2.5D effects. Users can create Freeform or Look At cameras, with the ability to adjust the position of the camera and target to create secondary motion, as well as set viewing distance constraints for layers.
Cavalry 2.0 also introduces a new experimental particle system for creating corresponding effects. It's still technically a preview, but it already includes a range of standard basic functions, including particle shape settings, emitter types, and modifiers. Particles can be emitted from points, shapes, trajectories, or distributions, and particle motion can be directed using trajectories, targets, forces, or turbulence.
Among other new features in Cavalry 2.0 are the new Auto-Animate behavior for animating shapes with fewer keyframes, as well as support for tapered strokes along shapes. Workflow improvements include the ability to customize overrides for precomps, making it easier to create composition variants. Users can group layers into simplified custom containers called "Components," controlling which attributes will be displayed in the user interface.
Performance improvements include a playback speed increase of 10-600% (the improvement is more noticeable in complex scenes, but Scene Group claims that on average it's around 200%). Cavalry now also supports background rendering, allowing you to continue working while scenes are being rendered.
Cavalry 2.0 is available for Windows 10 and above and macOS 11.0 and above. The full software is available for rental only, with a subscription cost of £192 per year (approximately $240 per year). The free version caps at full HD resolution and lacks the advanced features listed in this table.
