Chaos has released V-Ray 6 Update 2 for 3ds Max
For entertainment artists, the key change in the update is the built-in support for MaterialX - an open standard for creating material appearance and data that is now used in visual effects authoring tools. Users can import materials in the .mtlx format using the VRayVRmatMtl material. Additionally, the update expands support for another standard, the Universal Scene Description (USD), with support for USD for 3ds Max 0.6 - the latest version of the USD plugin for 3ds Max.
Professionals in architectural visualization are getting a bridge to the sibling application of V-Ray - Enscape. This feature is already available in the renderer version for SketchUp. The Enscape .vrscene importer allows users to import .vrscene files exported from Enscape. Currently, the feature is in beta and supports "environment, materials, and nearly all Enscape assets," with lighting being only partially supported in the initial release. Exporting .vrscene files from V-Ray itself is "up to 20 times" faster, and the file sizes for scenes with "massive" scattering data are "significantly smaller."
In the release, V-Ray scattering tools have also been updated: the new Chaos Scatter tool, introduced in V-Ray 6 for 3ds Max, is now updated to Chaos Scatter 4. Among the new features are the organization of scattering objects in a hierarchy, control over distribution based on terrain height, and the ability to rotate scattering objects in relation to a selected object.
Among the existing functions that have been updated, V-Ray Enmesh support has been improved - V-Ray's system for creating repetitive geometry on surfaces, in V-Ray GPU - the GPU/CPU rendering engine. V-Ray GPU now caches raster images between frames, speeding up rendering of animations and image sequences "up to 4 times." Additionally, V-Ray GPU now supports 3ds Max Standard's light projection map, as well as MultiMatte and VRayCryptomatte rendering elements in the V-Ray GPU mesh volume shader.
The old V-Ray Lights Lister and V-Ray Camera Lister have been merged into a unified list, allowing users to manage lights and cameras from a single location in the user interface.
Updates in the V-Ray Frame Buffer (VFB) include support for chromatic aberration and the ability to use a solid color as a background layer. Other changes include noise removal support when rendering into a texture, upscaling support in the Denoiser Tool, and color management support in OSL.
Beyond the main application, new IES light models have been added to Chaos Cosmos - an online asset library included in all V-Ray subscriptions. Additionally, users can now seamlessly submit tasks to the Chaos Cloud rendering platform, available as a paid service, with just a single click.
V-Ray 6 for 3ds Max Update 2 is compatible with 3ds Max 2019 and above, running on Windows 10 and later. It is available only through a subscription from Chaos. The subscription cost for V-Ray Solo is $77.90 per month or $466.80 per year, V-Ray Premium is $144.90 per month or $694.80 per year, and V-Ray Enterprise is $598.80 per year.
