The release of Twinmotion 2023.2 by Epic Games has taken place

The update aligns the software with Unreal Engine 5.3, the latest version of the real-time gaming engine and renderer. The updated engine includes several new features, the most significant being the support for Lumen, a real-time global illumination (GI) system in Unreal Engine.

The software now features two real-time rendering modes: Standard, which uses a volumetric approach to create ambient lighting, and Lumen, which employs a surface-based approach and ray tracing to calculate one bounce of direct light and one bounce of reflected light.

Lumen produces higher-quality renders but consumes more CPU/GPU resources and RAM. It falls somewhere in between traditional real-time rendering and ray tracing, which provides even higher rendering quality but consumes even more resources. In the initial release, Lumen is not available in VR mode and not supported on cycloramas and LED walls used in VR, although support for these is expected "soon."

Twinmotion 2023.2 also brings the software closer to real-world values for sunlight intensity. As a result, the auto-exposure algorithm has been adjusted to handle a broader range of exposure values, increasing the overall range from 4 to 26 stops. Additionally, new local exposure settings allow users to preserve shadows and lighting details in scenes with high dynamic range.
Among other changes, a new "Basic glass" material has been introduced to speed up rendering as an alternative to more feature-rich "Standard" and "Colored glass" materials, especially for scenes with a lot of transparent glass.
Water materials have been improved to accurately display transparency along the path, and snow and rain effects are more responsive to wind speed and direction.
Another significant change in Twinmotion 2023.2 is support for animated objects. Users can now import FBX or glTF/GLB animation for rendering within Twinmotion, with the ability to preview results using video controls or scrubbing. Both static and skeletal meshes are supported, so you can import 3D characters, although currently, facial blend shape animation is not supported, neither are animated cameras and lighting.

Epic Games has also replaced the old non-commercial free trial version of Twinmotion, which limited export resolution to 2K but was otherwise fully functional, with a new "Community Edition." This version remains free but, in addition to the resolution limitation, it does not provide access to Twinmotion Cloud, an online collaboration system.

Twinmotion 2023.2 is available for Windows 10 and higher, as well as macOS 12.x. Integration plugins are available for CAD and DCC applications, including 3ds Max 2017 and higher, SketchUp Pro 2019 and higher, and Unreal Engine 4.27 and higher.
The cost of new licenses is $749. There's also a free Community Edition with export resolution limited to 2K and no access to Twinmotion Cloud.
