Reallusion has released facial tools for use in ZBrush
ZBrush Face Tools is the second integration of Character Creator and ZBrush released by Reallusion this year, following ZBrush Pose Tools and ZBrush Pose Link, a pair of free plugins for transferring character poses between applications. Unlike those, ZBrush Face Tools is focused on working with faces and is a paid add-on.
ZBrush Face Tools simplifies the process of refining and detailing the heads and faces of 3D characters created using Character Creator in ZBrush. Users generate a base mesh in Character Creator, using morphing controls to approximate the overall head shape. The plugin then transfers this mesh to ZBrush, exporting the head, eyes, teeth, and tongue as separate subtools.
In ZBrush, the mesh can be further refined, adjusting the overall head proportions, creating fine skin details, or painting them using the Polypaint system. The plugin then transfers these changes back to Character Creator in the form of baked texture maps, converting the Polypaint data into diffuse textures and surface details into normal and cavity maps.
ZBrush Face Tools is also focused on facial expression customization, allowing users to switch between 13 sets of Character Creator expressions within ZBrush. Users can then fine-tune details in ZBrush, such as creating their own wrinkle models, which can be triggered by the new Character Creator dynamic wrinkle system. For stylized characters, the plugin also supports painting wrinkles in Polypaint.
In their blog, Reallusion mentions that the new plugin enables character artists to "perform the entire character creation process, from modeling to animation, regardless of their skill level."
For animation, users can export characters from Character Creator to iClone, the company's proprietary animation software, or use free bridge plugins to export to Blender, Unity, or Unreal Engine. The blog also mentions the use of the plugin for creating digital doubles based on 3D scanning, for which Headshot 2.0, a separate paid add-on, is required.
ZBrush Face Tools is compatible with Character Creator 4.32 and higher. The cost of a perpetual license is $299 for indie artists, which includes those with a full Character Creator 4 license earning less than $100,000 per year, and $1,490 for studios. Character Creator is compatible with 64-bit Windows 7 and higher operating systems. The cost of new perpetual licenses is $299.
