Maxon has introduced ZBrush 2023.2

Among the new features in ZBrush 2023.2 is the Anchors brush, which can be seen in the video above starting at 00:12:00. This brush allows you to set anchor points along the length of a SubTool and manipulate the geometry between these points. The brush comes with several different modes, including Scale and Inflate, which change the size of the SubTool, as well as Move, Rotate, and Twist, which alter its position.

The latter functions appear to be a fast and precise way to pose characters, enabling users to set limbs with greater accuracy than with existing tools.

In the video at the beginning of the article, you can also see how the Anchors brush is used in conjunction with the new Proxy Pose system introduced in ZBrush 2023.1. This system allows you to pose models with non-ideal topology.

Maxon describes this tool as "version 1.0," indicating that its functionality will be further developed in subsequent versions. Additionally, ZBrush has received an update to the Contact feature.
Originally designed as a way to make clothing move along with a character when they are in a stationary position, it now also functions as a means to attach one element of geometry to another.

Users can draw a transport line between two SubTools, allowing ZBrush to automatically move and rotate the SubTools, using surface normals to align it with the second SubTool.

Another significant change is that the Morph brush now works with Undo. In the past, users could save the current state of the mesh as a morph target during sculpting and then use the brush for selective undoing of changes.

Now, users can create markers at any point in the undo history and switch between them. During the live stream, Maxon described this workflow as providing "infinite morph targets: you can go back to any point in your history and make changes to your work."

Additionally, ZBrush 2023.2 introduces two new control elements in Spotlight, the ZBrush system for projection texturing. These controls manage surface offset when applying an alpha channel, and the new Spotlight MidValue controller fixes the maximum displacement and controls the surface movement inward or outward.

Spotlight Alpha Blur smooths displacement. According to Maxon's new update policy, the new features in ZBrush 2023.2 will be available only to subscribers. Users with perpetual licenses will receive bug fixes and improvements to existing features, but the new functionalities are "reserved for the next paid update," which means for the ZBrush 2024 release.

ZBrush 2023.2 is intended to be accessible only to ZBrush subscribers. The current stable release, ZBrush 2023.1, is compatible with Windows 10 and higher and macOS 10.14 and higher. The cost of new perpetual licenses is $895.
