The Grove 2.0 has been released for Blender and Houdini
The Grove utilizes a parametric approach to tree creation, where the control elements simulate factors that determine the shape of real plants. This enables the creation of more realistic models by accurately capturing the natural characteristics and variability found in actual vegetation.
Once the overall tree shape is defined, The Grove complements it with details using "branches," which are instanced geometry representing not only actual branches but also leaves, flowers, and fruits, which are sold separately from the main application. The resulting textured geometry can be exported from the user's program to standard file formats, including FBX and OBJ, for use in other DCC applications.
Users can also generate wind animation and tree growth, which can be exported in Alembic format. The Grove 2.0 is a major update that transforms the program from a Blender add-on into a standalone application written in the high-performance programming language Rust.
The new Grove Core engine, which doesn't have a user interface, handles all the underlying work, running tree growth simulations and creating the final 3D models.
Users control the software through add-ons for their host applications, including Houdini and Blender.
The Houdini plugin allows users to manipulate the 3D tree shape through a geometry network (SOP), although it is currently in beta and does not have interactive editing tools like the Blender plugin.
For Blender users, the benefits of the new architecture include a performance increase of "up to 20 times" and the portability of simulations. Simulations are saved within the .blend or .hip project file and can be moved along with it.
In the update, the method of simulating branch bending has been changed, resulting in more natural tree reactions to gravity. Additionally, old control elements such as Solidify and Fatigue have been removed.
In addition, The Grove now more accurately simulates the process of shedding lower branches as trees mature.
Among the new tree editing tools is Stake, which holds trees in a vertical position up to a specified height. The Auto Prune system and the Attract and Deflect forces have also been updated.
Another notable change is the introduction of a new UV islands system, which allows for the drawing of unique details on tree trunks, complementing the existing smoothly repeating bark textures in The Grove.
