Chaos | “Hollywood physics in UE4”

At GDC 2019, Epic Games announced Chaos, a new physics system that’ll debut in Unreal Engine 4.23, the next update of the game engine.

The company also demonstrated real-time ray tracing in Unreal Engine 4.22, which is currently in beta, and released the SDK for Epic Online Services, its new set of free cross-platform game development systems.

Real-time Hollywood quality physics

Described by Epic Games’ CTO Kim Libreri as a "Hollywood-quality physics" system, Chaos will allow users to create much more complex destruction effects in real time than is possible with current Unreal Engine tools.

In their video, Epic Games showed the capabilities of Chaos, demonstrating the urban landscapes destroyed by the player, columns and facades of buildings turned to dust with the help of various high-caliber weapons.

Unreal Engine 4.23: a new toolkit for physics of destruction

In addition to the fracturing abilities of the engine itself, Chaos has a dynamic evaluation of the deformation and "next generation" collisions and which it integrates with Niagara, the modular editor of VFX, presented in Unreal Engine 4.20.

The new destruction toolset in Unreal Engine 4.23 is going to be released this summer, and in future updates we can expect improved cloth and character physics.
