Mystical Swamp || Dark Fantasy Environment Concept Art
I was drawing a concept on a stream and here is the result. I wanted to create something interesting in my favorite genre.
A little pasta about the location.
This is the zone of the faceless shaman mini boss, a swamp in the forest. It is assumed that it will stand out due to the attributes of mysticism: all sorts of trinkets made of bones, runes on trees, all kinds of bindings, ritual stones and bells made of skulls accompanied by fog. Among other things, the trees here have a bizarre shape unlike the rest of the forest, one type is a broken tree with a vertical pattern, like a tree on the right and left in the background, the second type is a conventionally ritual tree in the foreground with a radial pattern, the place where the shaman will be.
The idea is that initially we don't see the shaman, but we see loot on the tree (the staff on the left is fake loot, the necklace is exactly in the center is real loot), plus, the tree stands out a lot, which lures us, but the shaman is sitting there, ready to hit the hat at an unexpected moment for us. In one scenario, he can sit between the roots, the place is clearly visible in the second version of the concept without a shaman. And so, we killed the reapers at the location, relaxed a little, went to loot the beautiful things in the trees, and then bang, and in the best traditions, Miyazaki arrives from nowhere.
Now about the characters.
This is a faceless shaman, a mini boss level. The basic idea is that when he puts on a mask, the spirit of that mask takes possession of him and his behavior changes with attacks. According to legend, he lost his identity and face in an attempt to comprehend the incomprehensible, summoned a spirit to imprison him in a new mask, but the ritual failed and when he put on the mask, it disfigured his face. From that moment on, he lost his main strength and his face is hidden under a cloth. To use magic, he resorts to the power of masks created before the incident.
In the faceless state (without a mask), he simply casts primitive spells and strikes with a staff, the behavior itself is calm, and the surrounding masks hover near him. When the mask changes to brown, a sound attack with bells on his belt is added to his attacks, as well as shooting tree roots that grow from his body, the nature of his behavior is active. When the mask changes to red, his behavior becomes aggressive and an elongation of these roots is added to the root shooting, at which point he can immobilize the opponent, push or pierce the roots. The call of local mobs is added to the sound attack, these are small devils + reapers. The devils are shown in the second version of the concept.
Among other things, he is able to cast spells / curses, which have two types, the first is something shining like in the image, the second option is the appearance of runes that envelop the enemy and gradually take away health, curse casts.
Now about the reaper
Here I had some kind of image in my head, without a strong backstory, I just wanted to create something interesting in the spirit of dark soul. In general, reapers, like the faceless shaman, are an undisturbed soul that lives in his mask, which is a weak point. The only difference is that the reaper's face is wrapped in bandages and soaked in blue blood, while the shaman's looks like a Soviet holiday tablecloth. He hovers over the water surface creating fog. When attacking, he uses a sickle, if you are close, he strikes vertically and laterally, if far away, he launches a sickle at you and returns it with magic (or a chain). If the player is behind him, he is attacked by the reaper's mantle, twisting the player with a cloth and chain.
